For many years, centrifugal pumps were used for the WellPoint dewatering process. WellPoint dewatering is used to lower the water table for construction purposes. Using centrifugal pumps for well pointing has two major drawbacks. Centrifugal pumps cannot run dry and they require an additional priming mechanism. Unlike centrifugals, positive displacement rotary lobe pumps have the added benefit of being self priming and they have the ability to run dry, with 50 % power lower than centrifugal pumps.
